Please measure carefully - we do not accept returns on the non-electronic collars listed in this section.
CHOKE
CHAIN COLLARS - STAINLESS STEEL - Our tack room
door probably has three dozen chokers hanging on it, none of which we'd want
anyone to see us using - they're so covered with rust they look awful. Of
course, all were guaranteed to be rust-proof. Well, our days of rusted chokers
are finally over! We're now able to offer the very difficult to find heavy
link (3mm) stainless steel chokers imported from Germany. We have these available
in five lengths to fit most sporting breeds.
Measure your dog's HEAD and add 4 inches. (Choke collars are measured from end of ring to end of ring, which takes up a couple inches right there, and they must be able to slip over the dog's head. And, since these collars are imported they actually are measured in cm and the true lengths are about 1/2" shorter than labeled.) Also please note that we do not guarantee these to be non-staining on white dogs. We carry them only because they are rust-proof.
PRONG COLLAR, QUICK
RELEASE - These are metal prong or pinch collars, which we feel are more
humane, and certainly more effective, than regular chain chokers. Ours are
made by Herm. Sprenger in Germany and feature the quick release snap which
makes them much easier to put on and take off. We just offer one size (Medium,
3.0 mm), intended for dogs with 15 to 21" necks (which means it's probably
the right size for your gun dog). The sizes are adjustable by adding or removing
links.
PRONG COLLAR LINKS, PER THREE - Sized for our medium prong collar, we sell these per three.
LEATHER CENTER RING COLLAR - This attractive and durable 1" wide leather collar is one of the best values around. It's made of fully-stitched, chestnut-colored leather with finished edges. It has a roller buckle, D-ring, and center safety ring. All hardware is non-rusting brass. We've been using this collar on our dogs for several months now and are very pleased with its appearance and durability. The 16" length fits all of our dogs, from a 6 month old DD puppy up through a large (overweight) retiree. Made in the USA. Details
(Our favorite type of ID tag for this collar is a brass slide-on which fits perfectly. We don't sell them, but you can get a supply at a great price at www.boomerangtags.com. We have no business relationship with them, but want to let our customers know about a good service.)
SAFETY COLLARS -
These are Biothane with center ring. They're sturdy, and won't absorb
water. The Lime and Bright Orange are highly visble in daylight. The 21" size will fit most medium to large gun dogs - those with
necks from about 16.5" to almost 20". Punch some extra holes with
a hot nail, and they'll fit slightly smaller dogs also. Sorry, we don't offer
ID tags.
Please note that we carry the above collar straps simply as a service to the occasional customer who needs some sort of collar quickly, or for those who already have ID plates or tags. If you don't have your own ID plate or tag, we feel that you would actually do better to purchase your kennel/ID collar from a retailer who supplies collars with ID plates attached. You will also find a number of websites that do a great job with tags. Although we have no business relationship with them, for our personal use we rely on www.boomerangtags.com.
PUPPY COLLARS - Suitable for pups of the medium to large breeds, or for any small dog, we stock a variety of nylon web adjustable collars with quick release attachments.
These Lucky Dog products are very basic and available in four solid colors. They're 5/8" wide and adjustable 9" to 13", in black, blue, or red. These collars often sell elsewhere for about $6:
REFLECTIVE COLLARS -
These collars are made by Coastal, and we stock them only in Large size
- for dogs having actual neck measurements of 18" to 28" (roughly
90 lbs. up). They're made of nylon web about 1" wide, with a gray reflective
coating actually embedded into the center of the band of webbing. These are
not as reflective as Reflexite collars, but the material seems to hold up
better. The black version makes a fairly good collar for the water dog owner
who wants a collar that's not very conspicuous on the marsh, but wants to
provide some protection should the dog enter the beam of a car's headlight.
There's a standard D ring and the buckle is a plastic quick release. Sorry,
we don't offer ID tags. For this one we'd recommend a hanging ID tag through
the tri-slide.
FIELD TRIAL/TRACKING
COLLARS -These 2" wide leather collars have a full width band of
Reflexite® and are fitted with heavy-duty solid brass hardware. Made by
TBI, these collars are intended for use with pointing breeds during field
trials and anytime extra visibility is appropriate. Equally appropriate for
hounds. This is the collar we prefer to use for tracking training - dogs can
pull easily against these collars. Sizes are measured
from the end of the buckle to the middle hole, so base your choice on the
dog's actual neck size. For continental breeds, a 16" nicely fits a 70
lb. dog, as does the 18" on a 90 lb. dog. If using for tracking, don't
hesitate to err on the larger side - some folks prefer a tracking collar that
can be slipped over the dog's head. Out of stock as of June '08; the manufacturer cannot estimate if or when production will resume.
